The G3 is an excellent platform for use with a .22 LR sub-caliber kit and the A&D Adapter allowing use with American-180 drum magazines.
Firing the A&D Adapter with a side-mounted grip allows use with very short barrels without interfering with the mechanism. It is extremely comfortable and controllable in this configuration.

The winder is the heart of the American-180 drum magazine. The FIRE and SAFE positions (arrows) are very necessary for proper operation of the drum. If it is under tension it can be removed to clear a jam by placing it on SAFE. It can also be preloaded with tension before mounting on the adapter without showering the shooter with a rainbow of ammo as long as it is on SAFE. If the winder is removed from the drum while under tension, and has not been placed on “Safe,” the spring will violently unwind requiring professional service to repair it.
The uninstalled winder is seen in the inset and is installed in the drum in the main photo. The arrows illustrate the relationship between the two pieces. When ready to use the drum, the winder is secured to the drum by pushing the nubs into the drum until they snap into place. On the factory metal drum it is held in place by two tight wires that hold it in the same manor.
When installed in the drum, the winder is rotated a specific number of clicks, depending on the size of the drum and the amount of ammo loaded. The spring loaded hands (white arrows) contract when winding and pop out against the notches in the drum (red arrows) when under tension to spin the drum in the opposite direction.
The A&D Adapter is locked onto the American-180 drum in this photo. It is mounted and removed by sliding the metal latch in the direction of the arrow.
These are alignment holes in the drum that accept pins in the adapter for proper and solid mounting.
Loading the American-180 drum. When using the A&D Adapter it is necessary to load 20 dummy rounds before loading live ammo. To load the drum, rounds are inserted facing the center. Each round has an individual slot. As the round drops into the slot the button (A) is depressed and the bottom (facing up during reloading) of the drum is rotated clockwise (B).
As the gun is fired, the top of the drum is rotated against the stationary top where it is scooped up (A) from each individual slot as it rotates in the opposite manor as it is loaded.
The Black Dog drum is easy to load thanks to the exposed internal winder. There are several finger grooves (arrow) that can be rotated during the loading to release the spring tension and make loading fast and simple.
