A company called the Sovietski Collection now is offering a most unique item direct from the former Soviet Union. A classic Russian sidecar motorcycle. These motorcycles are virtually identical to the ’40s era BMW “R” series made famous by WWII General Erwin Rommell, the legendary “Desert Fox”. Since 1939, Russia’s IMZ Motorcycle Factory, in the Urals, has sold 3.2 million bikes worldwide. The original WWII-era Soviet motorcycle, featuring the “Boxer” twin engine-the platform for this Sovietski motorcycle engine-served Mother Russia well in countless battles with Nazi troops. In the ’40s, Indian Motorcycle Company and Harley Davidson & Co. even produced a knock-off of the IMZ bike for the U.S. Army! Decades later, these sidecar motorcycles are still in use by Russian police and militia. They’re built like a tank and even have a Plexiglas windshield that is bullet resistant. The bike features a 650cc “Boxer”-style twin cylinder, air/oil cooled engine and a four speed transmission with reverse. The sidecar has an engagable drive wheel for off-road conditions.
